Sun certification is basically awarded to people who demonstrate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts of Java. There are multiple levels of Java/Sun Certification for candidates with varying levels of Java knowledge from a beginner to the most advanced user. Sun has divided the certifications into 3 basic categories - Java Platform, Standard edition - Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE, J2EE) and Java Platform Micro Edition (Java Certification for Mobile Development).
Sun/ Java offers various training and certifications in each of the three categories. A few years ago Oracle took over Sun Microsystems and since then all Sun/ Java exams are conducted by Oracle.
